DEER ISLE — Two Maine artists have been selected to receive recognition from the Maine Alliance for Arts Education (MAAE) for their outstanding work.
Stuart Kestenbaum, director of Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Susan Webster, artist-educator and Haystack’s community programs coordinator, will be honored in a ceremony at the Blaine House on June 7.
Kestenbaum has been selected to receive the 2011 Outstanding Administrator Advocate for Arts Education Award. This award is given each year to a school or organization administrator who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and support of the arts, established exemplary or innovative arts education programs and promoted the importance of arts in education.
Webster will be awarded MAAE’s Bill Bonyun Artist/Educator Award, which is given each year in honor of Bill Bonyun, whose career as a folklorist, storyteller, singer, writer and educator spanned over half a century. The award is given to someone who has made significant contributions to arts education, shown outstanding commitment and dedicated service in arts education and been an inspiration to students, teachers, and the community.
Executive Director Carol Trimble, said, “MAAE is delighted to honor the extraordinary work of both Stuart Kestenbaum and Susan Webster. Through their inspired vision and hard work, they have provided countless opportunities for students to experience high-level arts education.”
Katherine Greene, fine arts chairman at George Stevens Academy, stated in her nomination of Kestenbaum and Webster, “Between the two, individually and in partnership, they have changed lives through the arts for thousands of young people locally and statewide.”
The Maine Alliance for Arts Education is the only statewide nonprofit that works to strengthen education in all the arts.
