ELLSWORTH — Derek Hayes of Franklin and Britt Hulbert of Bar Harbor were the top winners in a field of 25 entrants in Saturday’s third annual “Dare to Try” Sprint Triathlon held by the James Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA.
Hayes, 33, turned in the best overall time — 72 minutes and 59 seconds — in the competition, which included a 500-yard swim, a 13.4-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile run.
Hulbert, 41, was the top female finisher, placing third overall with her combined time of 76 minutes and 40 seconds.
Runner-up was Doug Shattuck, 49, of Mount Desert with his combined time of 75 minutes and 32 seconds.
In the separate events, Keith Chandler, 17, of Hancock had the best time in the 500-yard swim, clocking 6 minutes and 12 seconds.
In the bicycle ride, Shattuck was the quickest to complete the 13.4-mile course with his time of 42 minutes and 31 seconds.
James Pellerano, 22, of Surry, who was fourth overall in 77 minutes, turned in the top time of 17 minutes and 58 seconds in the 3.1-mile run.

The trio of Mark Wanner of Bar Harbor, Dave Walton of Ellsworth and Carol Bult of Seal Harbor were the first place mixed team with a combined time of 76:58.
Joe Moran of Bar Harbor and Jacques Tardie and Marc Dupuy, both of Ellsworth, were the first place male team with a combined time of 65:41.
