ELLSWORTH — Getting stronger as the game wore on, righthander Dennis O’Neil pitched the Mount Desert Island Trojans to a 7-1 win over the Ellsworth Eagles on Saturday.

After giving up five hits and a run in the first two innings, O’Neil threw five shutout innings and allowed just one hit the rest of the way in his complete game win.

O’Neil, who struck out just three Ellsworth batters and walked two, got plenty of support behind him as the 7-2 Trojans played flawless defense in posting their sixth straight win.

The same wasn’t true of the 5-2 Eagles, who committed five errors behind hard luck righthander Thomas Sawyer, who also went the distance on the mound, allowing just five MDI hits.

The Eagles wasted no time mounting an early threat against O’Neil and the Trojans. In their first at bat, leadoff batter Andrew Austin beat out an infield single, went to second on a grounder to third and to third on a wild pitch.

But Austin was cut down at the plate when he tried to score on a grounder to third by Jordan Carter.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the second when K.J. Bailey was hit by a pitch, went to second on a walk to Cole McEnroe, to third on a sacrifice bunt by Duncan Smith and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cam Crawford.

The Eagles scored their only run of the game in their half of the inning.

Kyle Haslam and Delbert Beckwith led off with back-to-back singles, and Haslam moved to third when Ben Curtis grounded into a forceout at second.

After O’Neil got Brandon Braley on a called third strike, Austin had another infield single, scoring Haslam.

But the threat for more ended when Curtis was picked off third base.

From that point on, O’Neil was in command.

The Trojans added two more runs in the third when Shaw, who singled, and Caleb MacDonald, who reached on an error, both scored on a throw past home plate on a grounder to third by O’Neil.

Two more MDI runs crossed the plate in the fourth inning.

Crawford singled, Gordon Falt and Shaw both walked, MacDonald plated Crawford with a sacrifice fly, and Shaw then faked a steal of second, drawing the throw and allowing Falt to race home.

A double by MacDonald, a sacrifice fly by O’Neil and two more Ellsworth errors led to MDI’s final two runs in the top of the seventh.
