ELLSWORTH — Jill St. Peter, coach of the Ellsworth High School girls’ varsity basketball team, has submitted her resignation, according to Jay Brown, athletic director for Regional School Unit 24.

“Jill has resigned her position as girls’ varsity basketball coach,” Brown stated in an e-mail Monday.

“Jill has done a great job, put in many hours both during the season and out of it to turn the program around. It got to the point where it was affecting both her family and her job.

“Jill was a professional in all aspects of the job and we at Ellsworth High School will miss her and the way she accepted her responsibilities.”

Named coach in June 2009, St. Peter succeeded Robert Deetjen, who had resigned from the post after two years.

She is the daughter of Bruce MacGregor, who coached basketball for 37 years at what is now Husson University. St. Peter said at the time of her appointment that she grew up with a basketball in her hands.

St. Peter played varsity basketball at Hampden Academy for four years, then was backup center for two years at the University of Maine. She transferred to Husson and played another two years.

She has been a volunteer coach at the James Russell Wiggins Down East YMCA. She also coached basketball at the Orland Consolidated School and Bucksport Middle School.

The American was unable to reach St. Peter before deadline.
