Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 5:35 pm

ORONO — Mount Desert Island's only winter baseball team has become part of a program hosted by University of Maine baseball head coach Stephen Trimper. The MDI team plays weekly games at the Mahaney Dome on the Orono Campus. This is the first year MDI has participated.

The team has already played seven games and has a record of 1-5-1.

Players in the league are aged 9 through 12.

All teams have the opportunity to develop skills with the Maine Black Bears training staff and players in a half-hour practice held before each game. The team's coach and organizer is Scott Grierson; Mike Clark is the assistant coach.

The MDI team is composed of players from Southwest Harbor, Tremont, Bar Harbor, and Swans Island. The current roster is: Jose Chumbe, Seth Clark, Hunter Dougherty, Stanley Grierson, Micah Hallet, Ezra Johnson, Lincoln Johnson, Abraham Malloy, Jake Ritter, Miles Schumann, Nick Stanley, and Kendrew Vangorder.

The team's final game of the season will be against Holbrook on Monday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. Contact Scott Grierson at 917-543-3058 for more information.
