ORONO — Freshman Dan Curts raced his way to a pair of Penobscot Valley Conference championships in Eastern Maine Indoor Track League competition on Saturday at the University of Maine fieldhouse.

Curts took top honors in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 38.30 seconds, finishing nearly seven seconds in front of runner-up Evan Piccirillo of the Hampden Academy Broncos.

In the two-mile run, Curts made it no contest, pulling away from Piccirillo with about three laps to go and finishing 12 seconds in front with a time of 10:15.77.

Two Hancock County athletes — James Magnani of the Mount Desert Island Trojans and Molly Hunt of the Bucksport Golden Bucks — also won the coveted Anne Norton Clerk's Sportsmanship Awards.

Those awards go to a boy and girl who have exhibited good sportsmanship, congeniality and helpfulness to their teammates and others throughout the season.

Norton, for whom the award is named, was a longtime EMITL official and a PVC coach.

In the girls' team competition, Bangor scored 102 points, besting runner-up Brewer by 11 points. Following were Old Town 88.5, John Bapst 42, Ellsworth 30, Hermon 30, Orono 20, Hampden 17, Bucksport 7.5, MDI 4, Central 2 and Foxcroft, Mattanawcook and Sumner with no scores.

Freshman Aleta Looker and senior Brianne Dunn both turned in runner-up performances for Ellsworth's Eagles, both finishing behind Brewer senior Michelle Haluska, who won three events and was one of three girls named outstanding performers.

Looker placed second in the mile run with a time of 5:38.12 and third in the 800-meter run in 2:25.82.

Dunn gave Haluska a tough battle in the two-mile run before finishing with a time of 12:25.57, less than three seconds behind Haluska.

The Ellsworth foursome of Dunn, Krissy Luna, Sanna Norwood and Looker also finished as runner-up in the four-by-800-yard relay with a time of 10:39.61.

For Bucksport's Golden Bucks, Nelly Winship was third in the mile run in 5:38.87 and Lisa Tapley tied for fifth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 6 inches.

Rebecca O'Donnell of the MDI Trojans placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 7 inches.

In the boys' competition, it was Hampden the winner with 106 points, followed by Old Town 98, Bangor 58, Orono 40, Brewer 35, Central 21, Ellsworth 21, Mattanawcook 16, Hermon 14, John Bapst 11, Foxcroft 6, MDI 6 and Sumner 2.

For MDI, Magnani placed third in the 55-meter dash in 6.94 seconds.
