Grover Wins EM Title

BAR HARBOR — Ryan Grover of the Sumner Tigers won an individual title and the Ellsworth Eagles placed third at Saturday's Eastern Maine Class B Wrestling Championships at Mount Desert Island High School.

BAR HARBOR — Ryan Grover of the Sumner Tigers won an individual title and the Ellsworth Eagles placed third at Saturday's Eastern Maine Class B Wrestling Championships at Mount Desert Island High School.

Even with 113 points and eight wrestlers earning top four finishes, the Eagles were well behind the tournament leaders.

The Camden Hills Windjammers were team champions with 239 points, winning five individual titles and getting top three finishes from eight more wrestlers.

The runner-up Belfast Lions, with 209 points, had a tournament-high six individual champs with five more wrestlers finishing among the top four in the various weight classes.

The host Mount Desert Island Trojans had two fourth place finishes and were 10th among the 12 teams with 19 points.

Sumner's Grover, who trains and competes with Ellsworth, opened by pinning Sam Reeves of MDI in just 19 seconds.

He got his toughest battle of the day from Eric Weeman of Maine Central Institute before finally pinning him at the 5:50 mark.

Grover pinned Ben Wildes, his Ellsworth "teammate," in just 58 seconds in the semifinal and pinned Ethan Fitzjurls of Belfast in 3:15 to win championship at 152 pounds.

Ellsworth put three wrestlers in the championship finals, but all three came up short.

At 119 pounds, Brandon Goncalves made short work of his first two opponents, pinning Tanner Littlefield of MCI in just 20 seconds and Michael Selander of Caribou in 1:17.

But he dropped a 6-1 decision to Jordan Young of Belfast in the final.

At 171 pounds, Michael Philippon of the Eagles battled Elias Burne to a 12-8 win by decision in his opening round, then pinned Nick Bishop of Hermon in 3:03 in the semifinal.

Kornealius Wood of Belfast pinned Philippon in 1:57 to win the EM title.

In the 285-pound class, Michael Garland of the Eagles opened with a 30-second pin of MDI's Cody Bracy, then pinned Gabriel Delano of Medomak Valley in 3:16.

But Jacob Halberg of Camden Hills edged Garland in a 6-4 decision for the heavyweight title.

In the consolation finals for the Eagles, Dustin Smelley eked out a 4-3 decision over Derek Philbrook for third place at 130 pounds, and Josh Fowler scored a narrow 2-1 decision over Dylan Look of Medomak Valley for third place at 215 pounds.

Placing fourth for the Eagles were Sam Lounder at 145 pounds, Wildes at 152 pounds and Patrick Kidder at 189 pounds.

For MDI, Jonathan Sargent at 112 pounds and Elijah O'Connor at 135 pounds had fourth place finishes.
