Ellsworth Remains Undefeated, 13-0

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, February 02, 2011 at 2:20 pm

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles took a step closer to an undefeated regular season this week, traveling to Aroostook County to down the Caribou Vikings 59-45 on Saturday.

The 13-0 Eagles were slated to host the Washington Academy Raiders on Tuesday night, but the game was postponed until Friday at 7 p.m. because of snow.

Ellsworth is second only to the undefeated Camden Hills Windjammers in the Eastern Maine Class B standings.

The Mount Desert Island Trojans suffered a last-second 46-44 loss to the once-beaten Presque Isle Wildcats on Saturday.

But on Tuesday, they held off the George Stevens Academy Eagles to win 44-36 in Bar Harbor, improving their record to 13-2.

Following that game, the Trojans were ranked fifth in Class B.

Also standing solidly in the hunt for post-season tournament play are the 11-3 Sumner Tigers, who rank sixth in Eastern Maine Class C, and the 9-5 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners, who currently hold down the eighth spot in Class D.

Tuesday's loss to MDI dimmed the hopes of the 7-8 GSA Eagles, who are ranked 12th in Class C, two positions below the 10th and last tournament qualifying spot.

The Eagles have just three games remaining and two of those are against Bucksport and Orono, who have combined for just three wins.
