DEER ISLE — The Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners came out shooting, building a 16-5 lead in the first period and making it stand up the rest of the way in upsetting the Class C Sumner Tigers 64-51 on Thursday at Deer Isle.

The Sumner offense sputtered through most of the first half, but the Tigers ended the second quarter with back-to-back baskets — the second one a three-pointer — by Justin Chipman and Tylor Martin, cutting a 15-point Mariner lead to 10.

The Tigers picked up where they left off in the third period as a basket by Xavier Tracey and two more by Martin sliced the DI-Stonington lead to four.

But Sam Grindle hit a three-pointer and Hayden Ciomei followed with a conventional three-point play for the Mariners, pushing the lead back to 10 points and the Tigers never got closer than eight points again.

The Mariners pushed the lead to as many as 20 points in the fourth period before a trio of desperation three-pointers — one by Gabe O’Brien and two by Martin — narrowed the margin as time ran out.

Grindle finished with 18 points, Ciomei had 12 points and seven rebounds, Mario Bartlett had 11 points and nine rebounds, Dylan Brown added 11 points and Connor Morey chipped in with 10 for the Mariners.

Martin had a game-high 20 points and Dillan Harmon added 12 for the Tigers.
