BAR HARBOR — For the first time since 1999, the Ellsworth Eagle boys have bested their Mount Desert Island Trojan counterparts in swimming.
In a dual meet on Friday at the Bar Harbor YMCA, Ellsworth came away with a close 87-81 win over the Trojans.
“It was the first time … in my eight years of coaching,” said Ellsworth coach Jim Goodman of the win.
“It was a fantastic meet for the boys. They really wanted to go after MDI and they did it. They swam their hearts out.”
The Eagles were winners in seven of the 11 events, with Maks Grover and Keith Chandler recording two wins each and sharing in a pair of relay victories.
The Ellsworth girls, swimming some events without several team members who had other commitments, fell to the Trojans 117-50.
Cece McEachern was a double winner for the Eagles, and Emma Soucek had a pair of wins for the Trojans.
Both Eagle squads are growing with a combined 33 swimmers this year.
“The DEFY [Down East Family YMCA] swim team talent pool is starting to grow up,” said Goodman, and the high school team is the beneficiary.
