ELLSWORTH — The Bucksport Golden Buck girls are off to a 2-0 start after posting wins over Caribou on Saturday and Ellsworth on Tuesday.
Thirteen unanswered points in the third quarter provided the difference as the Golden Bucks downed the Eagles 41-28 at Ellsworth.
Until that point, the game had been close with neither team enjoying more than a five-point lead.
That lead came near the end of the first period as Bucksport’s Sadie Wight scored back-to-back baskets and Mindy Pye added two points on a fast break basket for a 14-9 lead.
But Ellsworth’s Sam McGuire hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, and Taylor White opened the second period with a rebound putback to knot the score at 14-all.
The game turned into a seesaw contest until Bucksport took a 25-21 third-period lead on a conventional three-point play by Debbie Wight, one of nine freshmen on the squad, and a lay-up by Pye.
After an Ellsworth time out, the Golden Buck defense came up with four consecutive steals, turning each one into two points, to take a 33-21 lead.
The Eagles never got closer than nine points again.
For the Golden Bucks, Wight and Pye finished with 12 points each and Bailey Blair had eight.
White led 0-2 Ellsworth with nine points and Morgan Card added five.
