Lady Vikings Eliminate Eagles

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at 1:00 pm

ELLSWORTH — For 79 minutes and 30 seconds, the eighth-ranked Ellsworth Eagles played the top-ranked Caribou Vikings to a scoreless tie on Tuesday at Caribou.

But with just 30 seconds to go in the second half, Olivia Sleeper curled a shot into the corner of the net to give the 12-1-1 Vikings a 1-0 win over the Eagles in a Class B quarterfinal.

“It was a fluky end to a very good game,” said Ellsworth coach Jen Myers.

The Vikings had missed another scoring opportunity with about two minutes left to play when Jenna Selander blasted a penalty kick high over the goal, said Myers.

But the game was “pretty much played in the midfield” from start to finish, she said, and neither team had a lot of good looks at the goal.

The Vikings outshot Ellsworth 12-6, but most of their shots were from long distance, said Myers, “and they didn’t follow a lot of the shots.”

The game-winner came as Sleeper was trying to get off a quick shot to avoid an advancing Ellsworth defender.

“She put it off the side of her foot,” said Myers, and it took a crazy curve and found that corner of the net.”

Ellsworth goalkeeper Jessica Toothaker got a hand on the ball, which was curling away from her, but was unable to stop it.

Toothaker finished with four saves and Caribou goalkeeper Morgan Swan had five stops.

Ellsworth finished with a record of 9-4-3.
