BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island varsity volleyball team ended its season Saturday, losing at home in the Class A semifinals to the southern Maine powerhouse Falmouth Yachtsmen in three straight games.

MDI’s Hannah Tardiff attempts to tip the ball past a Falmouth defender.—DARROLD DORR“We had a few errors and they’re a real good team and were able to take advantage of those errors,” said head coach Todd Brophy.

The Trojans got on the scoreboard first in game one, getting two points to the roars of the hometown crowd before Falmouth responded. The teams mostly stayed within one point of each other until Falmouth went on a four-point run to make it 16-20. After that the Trojans were able to put only three more points on the board and Falmouth won, 19-25.

In the second game, Falmouth scored first, but MDI responded immediately and it was a scrap as the teams battled it out. The Trojans kept their heads and hearts in the game, but lost in a heartbreaker, 23-25.

In game 3 the Yachtsmen put up four points before the Trojans responded and MDI lost the game 12-25, their last point of the season coming on an ace from Julia Christie.

“Our defense struggled,” said coach Brophy. “Communication is really the key and that broke down.”

He huddled with his disappointed players on the court after the game.

“They’re a good team – we were number one or number two all season,” said Brophy. “They were a joy to coach. I told them I was proud of them.”
