BAR HARBOR — On Saturday, five middle schools fielded a total of nine teams to compete in the first statewide Middle School Invitational Golf Tournament. The event was hosted by Kebo Valley Golf Club, and officiated by the Maine State Golf Association.

Teams attended from Greely Middle School, Camden-Rockport Middle School, Madison Junior High, Mount Desert Elementary School, and Conners-Emerson School to compete in temperatures not quite 50 degrees, with winds of 20 to 25 mph.

The conditions “turned a tough course into a monster,” said Kim Chatfield, the Camden Middle School golf coach. “The 438-yard, par 4 second hole, straight into the gale, was truly a challenge.”

The format was four-player teams, representing their schools, scrambling against par. Teams were divided into an 18-hole division and a 9-hole division.

In the 18-hole division, Camden-Rockport #1 team was the winner with a seven over par, 77, performance; followed by Greely Middle School #1 in second with 80 and Greely #2 team in third with 82.

In the 9 hole division, the Camden-Rockport #2 finished with 44; followed by Conners-Emerson School with a 49, including a par 3 on the difficult 194-yard ninth hole; Madison Junior High with a 50, including a birdie at the fourth; and a combination team from Northeast Harbor and Conners-Emerson with a 55.
