ELLSWORTH — With just one match remaining — Friday against the Calais Blue Devils — the second-ranked Mount Desert Island Trojans have a lock on post-season volleyball play.

The Class A Trojans, now 12-1, continued their winning ways this week with a close 3-2 win over the Washington Academy Raiders, the top-ranked team in the Class B standings.

The 5-7 Bucksport Golden Bucks moved into fifth place in Class B, the final tournament qualifying spot, with a win over fourth-ranked Woodland.

But the 3-8 Machias Bulldogs are less than two tournament points behind Bucksport with two matches still to go.

The Golden Bucks could strengthen their playoff hopes with a season-ending win over the Ellsworth Eagles Thursday at Ellsworth.

The 6-7 Eagles notched wins over the Sumner Tigers and the Narraguagus Knights in a doubleheader at Ellsworth on Tuesday.

But even with those wins, Ellsworth is ranked eighth and well out of the playoff picture in Class A.
