
BAR HARBOR — A touchdown with just 42 seconds to go snapped a 21-21 tie and gave the MDI Trojans a 28-21 win over the Waterville Purple Panthers on Friday.
Fullback Trevor Alley took the ball into the end zone from six yards out, then kicked the extra point to give the Trojans their fourth win in six outings.
Waterville struck first with Kyle Bishop scoring on a seven-yard touchdown run and kicking the extra point in the first period.
But the Trojans answered as Tyler Farnsworth had a two-yard touchdown plunge and Alley booted the extra point to knot the score at 7-all.
In the second period, Waterville went back in front on a 40-yard scoring pass from Bishop to Michael Quirion and another extra point kick by Bishop.
But again MDI responded as Duncan Smith scored on a one-yard rush and Alley again kicked the extra point.
MDI went in front in the third quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by Elias Burne and Alley’s third point-after kick.
But this time, the Purple Panthers evened the score at 21-all on a 25-yard touchdown run by Aaron Saucier and another kick by Bishop.
Farnsworth finished with 85 yards rushing on 22 carries and Burne had 86 yards rushing as MDI piled up 282 yards on the ground.
The Trojans will be on the road against the Camden Hills Windjammers on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
