ELLSWORTH — By the skin of their teeth, the Ellsworth Eagle golfers completed an undefeated regular season with an 8-0 record after eking out a two-stroke 185-187 win over the Mount Desert Island Trojans on Thursday at the Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor.
“The greens were faster than they have played all summer and it really took its toll,” said Ellsworth coach Jon Martin.
“We were actually four strokes down after the first two groups posted scores. Our only players left out were Josh Conary and Kevin Bryer.”
Going onto the 17th hole, Conary was six over par and needed to come in with a 48 or lower to give Ellsworth the win.
On the 17th, he hit the ball out of bounds and ended up taking a 9 on the hole.
“So if he pars his ninth hole, which is 18, he would shoot a 46,” said Martin. “He hit the fairway on his drive and then hit his second short. After an OK chip shot, he had a 5-footer for par, which he proceeded to drop, giving him a 46 and we won by two.”
Greg Martin led the Eagles with a 44 on the par-35 course, followed by Brandan Albee at 46 and Nick Richie at 49. Finishing behind Conary were Tyler Beardsley at 50 and Bryer at 63.
For the 3-6 Trojans, Ryan Bartlett was medalist with a 43, followed by Ben Walls at 46, Nate Chisholm at 48, Kyle McKim at 50, Kyle Greaves at 53 and Caleb Cough at 57.
Penobscot Valley Conference golfers are scheduled to tee off at 9:30 Thursday morning at JATO Highlands in Lincoln for the annual PVC team championships.
In other season-ending action, the George Stevens Academy Eagles finished with a 6-3 record after edging winless Bucksport 176-179 and nipping MDI by a single stroke 225-226 on Tuesday, the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners closed at 7-2 with a 157-188 win over Washington Academy, and the winless Sumner Tigers fell to Searsport 168-283.
