ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles had their scoring chances early but couldn’t convert, and the relentless Caribou pressure finally took its toll as the Vikings rolled to a 3-0 win on Thursday.
A shot by Heather Tupper with less than two minutes gone was just wide of the goal, and a Katey Curtis shot off a cross from Tupper sailed just over the crossbar just two minutes later.
The Vikings finally took the lead for good when Jenna Selander blasted a shot out of the reach of Ellsworth goalkeeper Jessica Toothaker and into the net at the 14:06 mark of the first half.
Selander struck again about 10 minutes into the second half when she launched a direct kick from about 25 yards that soared just beneath the crossbar and in to the net for a 2-0 Caribou lead.
The Vikings capped the scoring with just 20 seconds to go when Paige Small lofted a shot over the head of Toothaker.
Ellsworth coach Jen Myers said she thought the Eagle girls played well despite the fact that several of them were not feeling well and only 11 players had been able to practice the day before.
