Eagles Survive Trojans Rally

Written by  Hugh Bowden Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 10:24 am

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Eagles jumped in front 3-0, then had to survive a late surge by the MDI Trojans to claim a 3-2 win on Wednesday.

The Trojans came up with two goals in less than three minutes late in the second half.

Kyle Haslam put Ellsworth in front in the opening two minutes with a shot from the left side that beat MDI goalkeeper Richard Helmke.

Nick Holt scored the first of his two goals at the 10:47 mark with a header to the left side of the net, and added another early in the second half, this one coming off a shot on goal by teammate Josh Bean.

But with 14:43 to go, MDI’s Chris Clemens lined in a shot from just inside the penalty box.

Then, with 11-55 on the clock, Nick Shaw headed in a throw-in from Sam Burr, slicing the Ellsworth lead to a single goal.

But the Eagle defense refused to yield further and held off the Trojans the rest of the way.

Helmke and Audyn Curless combined for 15 saves and Jordan Carter had five stops for Ellsworth.
