BAR HARBOR — With booming bats and lightning arms, the Mount Desert Island High School Trojan girl's softball team subdued the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners on April 13 in a preseason scrimmage

Sophomore pitcher Jamie McKay looks to be a core element on the Mount Desert Island High School softball team this season.—JEFF WALLSAfter invoking the mercy rule in the early innings, they almost did it again in a second match-up but the cold and increasing darkness made it prudent to stop play before that happened.

Trojans head coach Dennis Meehan likes how his team looks in the early season and seems optimistic. Still, he doesn’t want to hex the team by counting the chickens before they are hatched, preferring to keep the team focused on continual improvement.

“They are strong, quick and hard working. They have some experience behind them this year. They are a good bunch; there is a lot of talent there. It is a fun team. They laugh a lot,” Coach Meehan said. “Every player has a lot of potential to help us. It is not like we just have four kids we rely on. I have thirteen kids that will each contribute. It will be a tough season but I think we can compete with anybody. I see a team that is willing to learn and that says it all to me.
