Eagles Come From Behind to Defeat Trojans

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, June 09, 2010 at 12:48 pm

ELLSWORTH — Righthander Andrew Hodge pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and his teammates gave him the run support he needed with a four-run sixth inning as the Ellsworth Eagles rallied for a 6-3 victory over the MDI Trojans on Wednesday.

“It was his best outing of the year without question,” said Ellsworth coach Dana Smith of Hodge’s performance.

The Trojans got a run without benefit of a hit in the third inning when Gordon Falt walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on a double steal after Robbie Logue walked.

MDI made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Dennis O’Neil singled, stole second and scored on an Ellsworth error.

The Eagles got a run in the bottom of the inning against MDI righthander Peter Logue when Ross Saunders walked, stole second and scored on a single by Jordan Carter.

They knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Andrew Austin walked, stole second and scored on an MDI error.

The Trojans reclaimed the lead in the sixth when Nick Shaw singled and scored on a double by O’Neil.

Logue had given the Eagles problems with his off-speed pitches, said Smith, but Ellsworth finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs with two outs.

Carter reached on error, pinch runner Kyle Haslam stole second and scored on single by Seth Cote to tie the game.

Austin then walked, Tyler Palmer singled and Cote and Ausitn both scored on an MDI error.

Dakota Jewett drove in the final run of the inning with a single.
