Team Makes Big Splash

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A small contingent of Mount Desert Island YMCA Sharks went to the YMCA New England Swimming Championships and made a big splash at the Blodgett Pool at Harvard University on March 13.

The diminutive squad of 8-and-under swimmers took a break from the Maine Swimming Championships at Bowdoin to travel down for the regional competition.

Joy Zhang became the New England champion in the 25-yard butterfly with a time of :16.01. She also placed sixth in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of :19.3.

The New England champion in the 100-yard individual medley is Liam Sullivan, who won with a time of 1:22.75. Sullivan also took second place in the 25-yard butterfly setting a new team record of :16.39 and third in the 25-yard freestyle finishing in :15.02.

Drew Shea set a new team record of :18.24 in the 25-yard backstroke on his way to finishing second, Shea also placed 14th in the 25-yard freestyle touching the wall in :15.91.

Combined, the Sharks quartet placed fifth overall in the 8-and-under category.
