DURHAM, NH — Two Mount Desert Island Trojan swimmers left the University of New Hampshire’s Durham campus with new titles on Saturday.

Chelsey Curran and Ian Carbone are the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke New England high school champions in their respective events.

Curran topped the girls 100-yard backstroke event, avenging a second place finish to Greely’s Sara Easterling at the Maine Class B state championships, beating her by seven one-hundredths of a second with her time of 1:00.55. Curran also took sixth in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall in 2:19.66.

Curran also swam the backstroke leg (split, 29.53 seconds) of MDI’s second place 200-yard medley relay in which she was joined by Ryann Rourk (breaststroke split, 33.56), Olivia Jacobs (butterfly split, 30.2) and Amelia Kief (freestyle split: 26.19). The foursome finished in 1:58.09.

The girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay, comprised of Curran, Rourk, Jacobs and Erin Connery, took sixth place with a time of 1:47.16.

Carbone stood atop the championship podium for the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke after touching the wall in 1:00.84.

He also was the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.25. The winner of the event, James Wells from Morse High School, set a New England record with his time of 1:57.35.

Carbone was the breaststroker (split, 28.32 seconds) in the boys’ 200-yard medley relay that also included Ty Onda (backstroke split, 28.0), Madison Luck (butterfly split, 27.72) and Andre Stevens-Rosa (freestyle split, 23.13). They finished fifth overall with their time of 1:47.17.

The MDI boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay of Stevens-Rosa, Onda, Luck and Carbone took fourth place with a time of 3:30.53.

Onda also represented MDI in the 200-yard freestyle, in which he took eighth place with a time of 1:54.57.

In the girls’ 200-yard individual medley, Rourk took 13th place, touching the wall in 2:25.33.

Stevens-Rosa competed in the 50-yard freestyle for MDI and placed 16th overall with his time of 24.19.

Freshman Connery took 13th place in the girls’ 500-yard freestyle, just slightly off of her personal best time, finishing in 5:47.28.

Luck, another freshman, earned a tenth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, exactly one second off his personal best time with a finish of 5:24.98.

Kief joined Rourk in the 100-yard breaststroke for MDI. Kief garnered a 13th place finish with a new personal best time of 1:16.45.
