Mustangs Gallop to Championship

Written by  Jeff Walls Friday, February 05, 2010 at 10:51 am

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Elementary School Mustangs finished their season with a 51-46 win over the Pemetic Indians for the Coastal Athletic League championships on Thursday at Mount Desert Island High School.

The Mustangs got out to a quick 7-0 lead against the Indians with 4:22 left in the first period. A three-pointer from Pemetic’s Jon Phelps 12 seconds later put the Indians on the scoreboard, bringing them to within two buckets of the ’Stangs.

A bone dry two minutes of play, highlighted by stellar defense from both teams, ended when Mustang Adam Fraley tossed one in off an offensive rebound to move the Mustangs out to a 9-3 lead.

Dylan Carroll turned around to help the Indians keep pace with the Mustangs by scoring from the field and then, after a completed Fraley foul shot, busted out a three-pointer to reel Mount Desert in to a one-basket lead, 10-8.

Baskets by Mustangs Josiah Welch and Fraley once again pulled them out to a sizeable lead as the first period wound to a close 14-8.

The Mustangs came out and scored two buckets to stretch their lead out to 18-8 before Pemetic mounted a minor comeback going on a six-point run to make the score 18-14. That would be as close as the Indians would get before the first half closed out with a score of 22-19, Mustangs favor.

Things would get a lot closer in the third period when Phelps tagged his second three-pointer to tie the game at 22 points with 6:38 left in the period.

After another quick hit by Welch, Carroll would throw in his second three-pointer of the night to give Pemetic its first lead of the night, 25-24.

A free throw by Pemetic’s Cordell Soper stretched the lead out to 26-24, but a field goal by Mustang Ryan Littlefield evened the score at 26 with 52 seconds left in the quarter. Littlefield hit a three-pointer with 26 seconds left in the quarter to give Mount Desert the lead going into the final period.

Abe Philbrook pushed the Mustangs out to a multibasket lead early in the fourth quarter by nailing a quick field goal. Littlefield added a free throw before Philbrook turned around and sank another shot giving Mount Desert a 34-28 lead with just over six minutes left in the game.

Pemetic whittled away the Mustang lead on foul shots from Carroll, Phelps, and team mate Steven Hanscom getting as close as 35-34 with 3:45 left but the fierce play under the boards by Fraley kept the Mustangs just out of reach until the final buzzer sounded.
