MDI Freshmen Boys Take Big East by Storm

BAR HARBOR — Completing the season with only one loss, having a 16-game win streak, and taking the Big East freshman boys’ basketball title, bode well for the future of Mount Desert Island High School’s basketball program.

This talented group of freshmen has set the stage for some very exciting basketball for the Trojan faithful.

The team started out with a 1-1 record, losing only to Ellsworth, in the second game of the season. “After the Ellsworth game we had guys that were in tears because they lost. They are so competitive. They just push each other day in and day out,” head freshman coach Andy Pooler said. “I told them that it was only the second game of the year and we were going to lose some games. I didn’t realize then that we would win 16 in a row.”

The Big East championship game was against Ellsworth on Tuesday in Ellsworth.

“It was a great way to finish off the season. I couldn’t be happier and more proud of the way these young men played,” Coach Pooler said. “They played a complete four quarters of team basketball. Such a pleasure to watch them play.”
