
LEWISTON — Ellsworth’s Hayley White, Brianne Dunn, Rosie Vachon and Darien Lewis won gold in the four-by-800-meter relay at Monday’s State Class B Indoor Track and Field Championships at Bates College.
The Eagle foursome bettered their winning performance of a week earlier in the Eastern Maine championships by nearly nine seconds, finishing the relay with a time of 10:24.87.
After failing to place in the EM championships, Ben Cummings of the Mount Desert Island Trojans turned in a championship performance in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12 feet, 6 inches.
MDI also had a pair of runner-up performances by the speedy Destiny Kanu, who finished second in the girls’ 200-meter dash in 26.98 seconds and second in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.15.
Kanu also finished fifth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.75 seconds.
Nat Hinckley of the Trojans placed third in the boys’ long jump, clearing 19 feet, 10 inches, and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 11.5 inches.
For Ellsworth, the foursome of Neal Anderson, Blake Pattengale, Drew Barkhouse and Ben Chapman placed fifth in the four-by-800 meter relay in 8:40.82.
Chapman finished sixth in the mile run with a time of 4:43.79.
In team competition, York won the girls’ meet with 65 points with MDI ninth with 19 and Ellsworth 17th with 10.
Falmouth won the boys’ meet with 71 points with MDI placing 11th with 18 and Ellsworth 21st with 5.
