ORONO — Freshman Cece McEachern of the Ellsworth Eagles brought home the only state championship of the season for the Ellsworth Eagles on Monday.

McEachern came from behind to pass St. Dominic High School’s Allie Lewandowski to capture the gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:09.76 in the State Class B Swimming Championships at the University of Maine.

She also nabbed the fourth spot in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:19.14, nearly six seconds faster than her best time coming into the day.

The Mount Desert Island Trojan foursome of Chelsey Curran, Augusta Blandford, Ryann Rourk and Amelia Kief also turned in a championship performance, winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:58.17.

But though they turned in a number of other strong performances, the Trojans were outmatched by the Greely Rangers, who finished with a score of 344.5 to MDI’s 263.5.

Ellsworth was 14th with 77 points and the George Stevens Academy Eagles were 25th with 4.

Other standout performances for Ellsworth:

The foursome of Mallory Nightingale, McEachern, Lainey Cohen and Rachael Searchfield won the consolation final placing ninth, in the 200-yard medley relay in 2:09.15.

Cohen placed 11th in the 500-yard freestyle in 6:16.41.

And the Eagle foursome of McEachern, Felicia Burgin-Wallace, Nightingale and Cohen won the consolation final, placing ninth, in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:14.19.

Nearly every swim for the Trojans resulted in a seasonal or personal best time.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Curran had a tough battle with Greely’s Sarah Easterling, gaining ground on her in the final 50 yards but finishing a close second with a time of 1:00.36 to Easterling’s 1:00.19.

The Trojan foursome of Olivia Jacobs, Courtney Sullivan, Rourk and Erin Connery was runner-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:00.54.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Curran led the Trojan charge in a tight contest with Rachael Clegg of North Yarmouth Academy.

The two finished just six one-hundredths of a second apart with Curran getting third with personal best time of 2:17.95 and Clegg taking second behind winner Easterling.
