ORONO — All dynasties come to an end.
After a six-year run as the Class B boys’ state swimming and diving champions, the Mount Desert Island Trojans took a back seat to the depth and performance of the Greely Rangers, coming in second by a score of 360-258 in Saturday’s state meet at the University of Maine.
The Ellsworth Eagles swam to a superb fourth place finish with 186 points behind the Belfast Lions, who had 234 points.
The shootout started early in the finals of the 200-yard medley relay when the MDI combo of Andre Stevens-Rosa, Ian Carbone, Ty Onda, and Jason Carbone touched the wall in 1:44.74, finishing just behind a Ranger foursome.
Ellsworth’s Eagles put up the third best time in the event with Lyle Stephenson, Tucker Cambridge, Travis Dennison and Maks Grover finishing in 1:49.75.
Onda was the sole point winner for the Trojans in the 200-yard freestyle, taking fifth place with his time of 1:53.48.
The Eagles had three swimmers in the consolation finals. Dennison earned ninth place with a time of 1:53.86, which would have given him a sixth place finish in the championship finals. Stephenson was 11th with his time of 1:59.35, and Grover was just behind him in 1:59.71.
MDI’s Carbone maintained his dominance in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing first by more than four seconds with his winning time of 2:00.58.
Ross Johnston also placed 10th in that event for MDI with a time of 2:25.9, a personal best.
Stevens-Rosa took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 23.87, shaving three-hundredths of a second off of his season’s best time.
Senior multi-sport athlete Ben Cummings was MDI’s sole diver, placing eighth with his score of 159.
Ellsworth came out of the diving break with a vengeance.
Dennison, who went into the finals with a season’s best time of 57.5 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, easily bettered that time with a runner-up finish in 54.08.
Keith Chandler took third place for the Eagles with his season’s best time of 58.03.
MDI’s Madison Luck cut nearly three seconds off his best time in the event, placing seventh in 1:00.36.
MDI put two more swimmers on the championship podium when Stevens-Rosa took fifth place in the 100-yard freestyle with his personal best time of 52.4 and Jason Carbone nabbed seventh with his personal best time of 53.5.
Ellsworth’s Grover and MDI’s Onda dueled for third place in the 500-yard freestyle.
Onda held the upper hand early, but Grover began whittling away his lead. At 300 yards, Onda held three-tenths of a second lead, but 50 yards later, Grover had taken the lead by 13 hundredths of a second and he stretched it out until the end, placing third with a time of 5:13.44.
Onda touched the wall in fourth with a time of 5:14.78.
Two Trojan freshmen also took scoring positions in the event. Luck was eighth with his personal best time of 5:23.98, and Johnston was 11th with his personal best of 5:44.51.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Ellsworth won the consolation finals with a foursome of Ridge Jordan, Blake Carney, Ben Walton, and Chandler finishing with a time of 1:43.47 for ninth place.
MDI’s quartet of Nathan Genrich, Cummings, Joesph Kief, and Luck touched the wall just over a half-second later for 10th place with a time of 1:44.03.
Chandler placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke for Ellsworth with a time of 1:00.35, and Stephenson won the consolation heat for ninth with his swim of 1:01.57.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, MDI’s Carbone defended his state championship title, winning by more than two seconds with his time of 1:00.79.
Jason Carbone also placed fifth in the championship round with his time of 1:07, a personal best.
Ellsworth’s Cambridge was sixth in 1:09.85, MDI’s Kief took ninth place with his personal best time of 1:12.89 and Tomas Brandhner was 10th with a personal best 1:13.68.
The day ended with another MDI/Greely showdown in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the Trojans — Stevens-Rosa, Onda, Jason Carbone and Ian Carbone — finishing just 53-hundredths of a second behind the Rangers in 3:25.06.
The Ellsworth foursome of Cambridge, Stephenson, Dennison and Grover took sixth place with a time of 3:41.53.
