Tigers Cling To 1 Point Win Over Patriots

Written by  Hugh Bowden Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 10:33 am

The Tigers won their second cliffhanger in as many games on Monday, holding off a fourth-period rally to nip the Bangor Christian Patriots 53-52 in Bangor.

Playing without leading scorer Tommy Bell, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury, Sumner got off to a strong start, building a 14-5 first period lead and holding a commanding 31-15 edge at halftime.

The Tigers, who evened their record at 6-6, led by as many as 20 points in the third period, but the Patriots outscored their opponents 37-22 over the final two periods to close the lead to a single point before time ran out.

“We went to the foul line five times at the end and didn’t make any of them,” said Sumner coach Walter Crabtree.

“But to give them credit,” he said of the Patriots, “they made some shots.”

Brett Deniger led the Tigers with 22 points, Gabe O’Brien added nine and Josh Ring chipped in with eight.
