Thursday, April 02, 2009 at 10:31 am
CASTINE — The Lady Mariners rocky start to their season continued on Wednesday, as they lost 9-2 and 10-0 to the Owls of UMaine Presque Isle in a non-conference double header at Ritchie Field.
Freshman catcher Kayla Higgins (Sullivan) led the MMA offensive attack in the first game with three hits and two RBI's while smashing her first home run of 2009 over the right field fence. Sophomore outfielder Megan Russell (Peru, ME) went 2 for 4 with a run scored while Mallery Stanley (Standish) collected one hit. Mallery Stanley got the start on the mound for MMA and gave up 9 hits, 10 walks and 9 runs in the loss.

Maine Maritime dropped to 0-7 on the season, losing the second game of the double header 10-0 to the Owls. The Lady Mariners and the Owls were tied at 0-0 through four innings before the bats came alive for UMPI scoring 4 runs in the 5th and 6 runs in the 6th to put away MMA.

MMA's mustered only two hits, both coming from their lead off batter Megan Russell. The Lady Mariners were hampered by 2 costly errors and 15 walks on their way to losing in 6 innings.
