Three local events are scheduled in commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 18.
Peninsula Peace and Justice invites the community to a celebration and commemoration of King’s life on Sunday, Jan. 17.
A candlelight vigil will take place in front of Blue Hill Town Hall from 4:30 to 5 p.m., followed by a gathering at the Blue Hill Library from 5 to 6:30.
The library gathering will include film showings of selected speeches by King. Light refreshments will be served.
There is no charge for the event.
Voluntary contributions may be made to the Martin Luther King Memorial Fund.
Information: 326-4405.
Another area event will have the acoustic duo Timbered Lake performing at the Union Church of Northeast Harbor at a special service on Sunday, Jan. 17.
The service is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Timbered Lake will follow the recent performance of Hawk Henries in a series of performing arts events being sponsored by the church.
Timbered Lake’s guitarist-singer-composer Diana Ramsdell Newman and poet-singer- percussionist Crow Suncloud perform original music that has been described as “luminous with soaring harmonies, socially relevant and hauntingly beautiful.”
Timbered Lake has been featured at the International Climate Change Conference at the University of Maine, Native American gatherings, environmental forums, coffeehouses, festivals, concert halls, libraries and farmhouse kitchen tables.
Timbered Lake will open the morning service with “Dawn-lit Mists,” a composition inspired by Acadia National Park, and “Hear the Wind,” which is about spiritual reclamation and heritage.
The songs “Carry the Dream” and “It’s Time We Get Together” will be sung midway through the sermon in honor of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
In the event of a major storm, the snow date for the Timbered Lake appearance will be the following Sunday.
