MDI, GSA and DI-S Appear Headed for Post-Season Play

Written by  Hugh Bowden Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 2:29 pm

ELLSWORTH — With less than a week remaining in the regular season, the Mount Desert Island Trojans, the George Stevens Academy Eagles and the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners are poised for post-season play in girls’ soccer.

In Eastern Maine Class B, nine teams will advance to tournament play with a preliminary playoff slated for the number eight and nine teams.

The 6-5 Trojans currently are ranked eighth with the 7-4 John Bapst Crusaders in ninth.

In Class C, 10 teams will qualify with the top six advancing directly to the quarterfinal round.

The 8-3 GSA Eagles currently are ranked fifth and would have to climb at least one spot to enjoy home field advantage in the quarterfinal round.

In Class D, eight teams qualify for post season play with no preliminary playoffs needed.

If the 6-4-2 Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners can hold on to their third placing ranking, they will host a quarterfinal against the number six team.

Three other Hancock County girls’ teams — the 4-7 Ellsworth Eagles, the 2-8-1 Bucksport Golden Bucks and the 0-14 Sumner Tigers — are out of the tournament picture.
