Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at 1:47 pm

LINCOLN — The Ellsworth Eagles, the George Stevens Academy Eagles and the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners all will compete for state team golf titles on Saturday at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

Those three teams were among the top performers on a cold and windy Thursday at the annual Penobscot Valley Conference Championships at Jato Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln.

In Class B competition, Ellsworth finished third with a score of 353, behind the PVC champion Mattanawcook Academy Lynx at 344 and Presque Isle at 345.

In Class C, the GSA Eagles were the distant runners-up, finishing with a score of 358, 23 strokes off the winning performance of the Houlton Shiretowners.

Just one stroke behind GSA came the Penobscot Valley Howlers at 259, followed by the Mariners at 368.

Eight Hancock County golfers also were among the top 25 PVC finishers, thus qualifying for competition in the state individual championship competition on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Natanis.

Sam Grindle of the DI-S Mariners had the top score of the day at the PVC competition with a round of 73.

From Ellsworth, Greg Martin came in at 80 with Brandan Albee and Nick Richie, both at 87, winning their spots in a sudden death playoff.

Connor Morey of the Mariners had a round of 82, and from Bucksport, Ryan Bailey and James Potter both finished at 83.
