MDI Girls Get First Soccer Win Over Ellsworth Since 1997

ELLSWORTH — Last week’s 2-1 win by the Trojan girls over Ellsworth was more than just another victory.

It marked the first time in 12 years that a Trojan girls’ team had defeated county rival Ellsworth in soccer.

The winning goal came on a penalty kick by MDI junior Courtney Sullivan, following a tripping call against Ellsworth inside the penalty area with 13:14 remaining in the second half.

Jessica Toothaker, Ellsworth’s freshman goalkeeper, made a diving attempt for the stop and got her hands on the ball but couldn’t halt its progress into the net.

The Eagles dominated play almost completely in the first half, keeping constant pressure on MDI goalkeeper Elizabeth Sargent.

But Sargent proved equal to the challenge and Ellsworth had nothing to show for its effort when the teams left the field at halftime.

The only serious bid for a first-half goal by MDI came with 5:20 to go when a direct kick by Sullivan bounced off the crossbar and was grabbed by Toothaker.

The game was played on more equal terms in the second half, with the Trojans winning their share of 50/50 balls.

The Trojans narrowly missed a goal less than four minutes into the period when a corner kick was tipped away by Toothaker.

The Eagles missed a scoring opportunity off a direct kick when the ball eluded Sargent and rolled loose in front of the open goal. But an MDI defender alertly cleared it away.

MDI finally broke the scoring drought at the 30:06 mark when a throw-in from the sideline by Jamie McKay sailed into the goalmouth and was deflected into the net by Brailee Black to put the Trojans in front 1-0.

Ellsworth finally scored with just 1:52 to go when a direct kick by Gabi Huebner was knocked away by Sargent but pushed right back into the net by freshman Taylor White.

Sargent finished with six saves on 11 shots and Toothaker had four saves on nine shots.
