Golf Tourney Adds $5,120 To Jina’s Gym Fund

TRENTON — Forty golfers competed in the final Jina’s Gym Golf Tournament on Sept. 26 at the Bar Harbor Golf Course with the team of Rhonda Boynton, Gary Kane, Rebecca Sargent and Bo Lewis taking top honors.

Finishing second was the foursome of Mark Anderson, Steve Joy, Jim Leavitt and Sandy Salisbury.

Prizes for closest to pins, donated by Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, went to Steve Crabtree, Bo Lewis, Bill Neleski Jr. and Mark Anderson.

Some 80 sponsors and donors provided cash and/or prizes and the tournament raised $5,120 to be added to the Jina’s Gym Fund memorializing Jina Haslam of Lamoine, who died several years ago after being struck by a car as she was riding her bicycle.

The fund, which has raised more than $240,000 over the past several years, will be used to renovate the gymnasium at the Lamoine Consolidated School, where Jina was a student.

Completion of that project is scheduled by Jan. 4, 2010.

Any balance in funds remaining will be added to the Jina Haslam Scholarship Fund, which provided scholarships in June to members of Jina’s eighth grade class who graduated from Mount Desert Island and Ellsworth high schools.

Future guidelines will be developed by a committee and a scholarship will be awarded to a 2011 college student in the animal science field, with a possible additional beneficiary should funds allow.

Members of Jina’s family expressed their gratitude to all who participated in the fund-raising effort.
