Jeri Small was the picture of elegance in the hat she fashioned from a black plastic trash bag, adorned with red and white ribbons.
Carolyn Howard made a bold fashion statement with her elaborately decorated green plastic salad bowl chapeau.
They were among more than 130 people who attended Island Connection’s annual Fun Hat Luncheon Sept. 3 at the Deck House Restaurant in Southwest Harbor. Several dozen people sported hats they made especially for the occasion. Some were pretty, some were cute, and many were just plain wacky, which was in keeping with the theme of the event.
Entertainment was provided by the Deck House Players, who double as the restaurant’s wait staff. Between serving meals, pouring coffee and clearing tables, they performed lively song-and-dance numbers to the delight of their audience.
Island Connections has scores of volunteers who provide free transportation and other personal-assistance services to the elderly and people with disabilities on Mount Desert Island, to enable them to continue living independently.
Jan Varnum, president of the Island Connections board of directors, said the annual Fun Hat Luncheon is an opportunity for the organization’s clients to get together, enjoy each other’s company and express their fashion creativity.
“It’s a lot of fun; everyone always has a good time,” Ms. Varnum said.
