PORTLAND — Now in its 22nd year, the Maine Boatbuilders Show has become a major event on the Portland waterfront.

While still a showcase for Maine boatbuilders and other members of the Maine marine industry, exhibitors — and spectators — now travel great distances to participate in the event.

According to Phin Sprague, owner of Portland Yacht Services, the Maine Boatbuilders Show drew 5,967 spectators, and hosted roughly 1,800 people connected with the 205 participating exhibitors.

Exhibitors were cheered by the crowds and while few expected to sell any boats at the show, many appeared to share the view expressed by Wythe Ingebritson of Morris Yachts — that show visitors seemed to be upbeat, if cautious, despite the state of the economy.

The Hancock County marine industry was well represented this year including Ellis Boat Co. in Southwest Harbor and John Williams Boat Co. in Hall Quarry.

Several local builders brought smaller boats to the show including Brion Rieff, Peter Chase, The Classic Boat Shop, and the Cranberry Island Boatyard.

Other boatbuilders represented were Atlantic Boat Co., Wilbur Yacht, The Hinckley Co. and Union River Boat Co.

On Monday, Sprague confirmed the view expressed by many of the show’s exhibitors, that this year’s show was another success.

“We’re very happy to have been this strong,” Sprague said.
