MOUNT DESERT — The fastest MDI man and woman in the MDI Time Trial on Aug. 23 were Patrick Barter who placed third overall with a time of 34:05 (24.6 mph), and Liddy Hubbell who was the third-fastest woman overall with at time of 37:21 (22.5 mph). The Downeast Bicycle Club hosted the third annual event, the 11th race in the 13-race schedule of the Peak Performance Maine Event Time Trial Series. The rain and wind deterred a larger field, but the rain stopped shortly after the first few riders started, and for the most part, all the 25 competitors had to contend with was the wind.
This course was a 14-mile out-and-back route from the Tremont Community Center to the Cape Road and back to the Route 102-A connector. The fastest male rider by 2 seconds was Dan Hickey, 51, of Lincolnville, with a time of 33:13 and an average speed of 25.3 mph. The fastest female by 10 seconds was Marianne Stover, 39, of West Bath, with a time of 36:56 and an average speed of 22.7 mph.
Three first-time time-trailers competed, including two brothers visiting Mount Desert from San Francisco, and noted runner Judson Cake from Bar Harbor. Well-known local bicyclist Richard Balderelli rode his fixed-gear bicycle to Tremont from his new home in Trenton, competed in the time trial and then rode up Cadillac Mountain (in the wind) on his way home.
