NEWPORT — At the Snow Ball basketball tournament in Newport, Maine over the weekend of March 13, the MDI girls were among five teams to compete. Sierra DaGraca was the second-place winner of the three-point contest at the Snow Ball Tournament for the third and forth-grade girls.

“This was the girls’ first experience playing a real game against another girls’ team. I was so impressed with their enthusiasm and hard work,” said Coach Crystal Nelson. “With only eight girls on the team, these players had to play for longer lengths of time, but still gave their all. Though we did not come home with the trophy, these girls are champions to me!”

MDI players included Sierra DaGraca, Mariah Hamor, Paige Murphy, Emma Watras, Maya Watras, Katie Clark, Alicia Norberg, and Adriana Novella.

Also at the tournament, the MDI YMCA third and fourth-grade boys pulled off three upset wins before falling in the playoff round.

To get to the playoff, the boys beat Glenburn 22-11 with both Russell Kropff and Spencer Michaud nabbing eight points. In the second game, MDI defeated Hartland 24-12.
