Mike, as he was known to most, grew up in Blue Hill and graduated from George Stevens Academy in the Class of 1935. Mike was a Merchant Marine officer, sailing the North Atlantic in Liberty ships during World War II. Following the war, he joined Sun Oil Co. (Sunoco) as a radio officer in their tanker fleet. He was employed by them for 32 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alma B. Gray; daughter, Bonnie Scholl and her husband, Harrison, of Burnett, Texas; son, Scott Gray and his partner, Edward Griffin, of Blue Hill; three grandchildren, Tanya Blake, Heather Peacock and Allisan Gray; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, at the family cemetery at 892 Kingdom Road, Blue Hill. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Scott and Edward’s home. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Mike’s memory may be made to George Stevens Academy, 23 Union St., Blue Hill, ME 04614. Arrangements by Jordan-Fernald, 141 South St., Blue Hill.
