ELLSWORTH — Without discussion, the Regional School Unit 24 Board Tuesday evening approved additional funding by the towns of Lamoine and Hancock to send some of their students to Mount Desert Island High School. The debt service payment, which totals about $1,000 per student, has been a decades-long agreement to help defray construction costs at MDI High School. Lamoine voters late last month approved the debt service payment 163-136. Hancock selectmen are expected to act on the same issue this week. Three of the 14 board members were absent. The vote was 9-2. Ellsworth board members Dick Gray and Alice Dow voted not to approve the towns’ decision to pay the debt service. “I don’t believe in spending money outside the school district,” said Gray.
