ELLSWORTH — Looking for some fun while growing up in Old Orchard Beach, Jackie Thurber used to take the short jaunt to Portland to catch a drive-in movie. It was cheap entertainment that was made even better by being outdoors.
Now Thurber can relive her childhood memories thanks to a summer series of open-air movies sponsored by Ellsworth Arts, a nonprofit organization. “Ellsworth Under the Stars” will feature children’s movies on the lawn of the Knowlton Elementary School every Thursday night from July 15 through Aug. 26. Thurber and a few dozen others were on hand June 3 when Ellsworth Arts kicked off the series with a showing of “Alice In Wonderland.” “It’s really nice entertainment,” said Thurber, an Ellsworth resident. “It’s free, family and friendly.” Ellsworth Arts started the series “Ellsworth Under the Stars Outdoor Cinema” last summer.
