BAR HARBOR — Fueled by a desire for adventure surrounded by the comforts of home, the Herzog family has spent the past 10 summers traveling cross-country in a recreational vehicle.

Travel writer Brad, his wife, Amy, and their two sons Luke and Jesse have been designated the Explore America Family by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. They arrived Tuesday to spend a night along the shores of the bay at the KOA in Bar Harbor.

This was their first time visiting Mount Desert Island but not their first trip to Maine.

Herzog had been to such popular destinations as the towns of Moscow and Siberia, Maine, while writing his first travel memoir “Small World.”

The RV fascination was stirred when the couple spent most of their first year as newlyweds driving across the country in an RV while he wrote a book about their travels.

“Along the way we fell in love with the RV experience,” Herzog said. “You have the adventure of the open road but the comforts of home. Both of those things are extremely important to me.”
