BAR HARBOR — The historic Art Deco Criterion Theatre was officially illuminated for the first time last evening (Thursday, April 9).

The party began at 6:30 p.m. with free refreshments. At 7 p.m., theater president Rob Jordan took to the stage to thank the businesses and individuals whose generous donations made it possible for the marquee to be refurbished.

“We would first like to thank our past board members who served us so well and continue to support our efforts,” Mr. Jordan said. Former members include: Greg Dalton, Steve Zirnkilton, Erin Uliano, Tony Uliano, and Kim Swan

“I would like to recognize and express my appreciation to our current board,” he added. Members include: George Demas, Joe Cough, Nessa Reifsnyder, Gail Leiser, Carlene Hirsch, Bill Reiff, and Chris Witham.

Businesses and individuals that have donated a total of $100,000 towards the $150,000 marquee restoration include: Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Company, The First Machias Savings Bank, Galyn’s restaurant, Cadillac Management corp., Rose Cliff Cottages, Swan Agency Insurance, Erin Uliano, Tony Uliano, and Swan Agency Sotheby’s International Realty

When the marquee was installed two weeks ago, Andy’s transport provided the carriage and driving skills, L.E. Norwood provided the boom truck and The Bar Harbor Police department provided the escort. Bangor Neon was hired for some of the lighting. Cadillac Builders did the internal structure and welding for the marquee. “We would also like to thank A4 architects and Dan McGraw for design and engineering,” Mr. Jordan said.

Metal Magic in Trenton did most of the work. Workers there include: Pam Linscott, Creg Cornelius, Paul Davis, Carlton Love, and owner Ed Libitski.

“A big thank you goes out to Steve Lambert of Bar Harbor not only for his many hours of wiring and electrical work on the Marquee but for all he does for the Criterion,” Mr. Jordan told the crowd of more than 150 people.

The party moved outside around 7:20 p.m. and with a countdown from 10 the switches were thrown and the refurbished marquee glowed with life.

Afterwards the theater showed a free Bruce Springsteen concert on its high definition screen.

The new marquee was produced to look like the original by Metal Magic of Trenton, incorporating many of the old components and designed to be more “green” with the use of compact flourescent and LED lights. The majority of the structure is composed of polished stainless steel, and includes elements of aluminum and brass.
