BLUE HILL — Students and staff in the Union 93 schools can expect to see a familiar face this month, as Denis Howard reprises his role as interim superintendent.
Howard served as interim superintendent for nearly a year during the 2006-07 school year while officials conducted a search to fill a superintendent vacancy.
Art Wittine was hired for the job. He will serve his last day on Dec. 31 and Howard will serve on an interim basis during a search for Wittine’s replacement.
Union 93 includes schools in Blue Hill, Castine, Penobscot and Brooksville, and the Union 93 superintendent also provides administrative duties for the town of Surry.
Ben Wootten, a Blue Hill School Board member and secretary of the Union 93 board, said Howard would begin part-time duties this month.
Wootten said a search committee has been formed to find a new superintendent and some candidates have responded to advertisements. He said that if a suitable candidate is found, the position could be filled during the current school year, but likely won’t be filled until after the end of school in June.
“It’s possible,” he said, “but it’s unlikely we will find someone who’s good and immediately available. Since Denis [Howard] is familiar with Union 93, it made sense to get him in if he was available.”
Howard holds two undergraduate degrees from Thomas College in Waterville, as well as a master’s degree in school administration from the University of Maine and a doctor of education degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
He began his career in education as a teacher and coach at Washburn District Highs School in Aroostook County in the late 1960s. He taught and coached at Belfast Area High School, where he also served as principal and assistant principal. From 1985 to 1989, he served as principal of Bucksport High School. From 1989 to 1999, he served as superintendent/director of Waldo County Technical Center.
In addition to his interim service for Union 93, Howard has served as superintendent of schools with the Islesboro School Department and MSAD 5, which includes Rockland, Owls Head and South Thomaston.
He and his wife, Linda, reside in Belfast.
