MDI: Seasonal Business Shuffle is On

BAR HARBOR — Several new businesses are poised to open downtown this season, while several others have changed ownership or location over the winter.

On lower Main Street, at 270, Betty Walls has continued the conversion of her doll shop with the opening of Gram’s Pizza, offering pizza by the slice and by the pie, along with chowder, sweets and other vitals.

Just up the street, wine expert Dawn Lamendola has partnered with restaurateur Michael Boland to open House Wine at 227A Main Street. The shop will specialize in organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines, and will offer consulting services for local restaurants and private collectors. The pair intend to keep the shop open year round.

Tapley’s Variety Store at 317 lower Main Street was sold this winter to Doug Smith of Ellsworth, who renamed it the Main Street Market and Grill.

The Parkside Restaurant, at the corner of Main and Mount Desert streets, has a new owner; Jen and Andre Lozano purchased the business from Evan Contorakes over the winter. The Bar Harbor Brewing Company, which Mr. Contorakes purchased last year and moved to a storefront next to the restaurant, was sold to Atlantic Brewing founder Doug Maffucci.

The Bar Harbor Tea Company has a new location. Owners James and Stacy Downey moved the shop from a storefront beneath the Parkside Restaurant on Mount Desert Street to a larger space at 150-2 Main Street.

Fair Trade Winds has moved from its Firefly Lane location to a larger space just a couple of doors down, on the corner of Firefly Lane and Main Street, which was formerly the Get Clocked shop.

A contemporary art gallery, Side Effects, featuring the work of owner Jeff Freeman, has opened in the space vacated by Fair Trade Winds.

Just next door to Side Effects is Peace, Love and Lobsters, a T-shirt and souvenir shop.

The Sea of Cotton has changed locations. The clothing store moved from 12 Mount Desert Street to 19 Cottage Street. In its place is poised to open Weaving a Life, which sells small, portable weaving looms.

On Main Street, The Black Moose, selling ice cream and apparel, has opened next to Debbah’s T-shirt and souvenir shop.

Next to Sherman’s Books and Stationary, at 62 Main Street, the Acadia Corporation has opened the Acadia Park Company shop, selling a variety of Acadia National Park related goods.

A new restaurant is opening on Rodick Street. Jenna Dwyer will oversee operations at the Side Street Café at 49 Rodick, in a much-renovated space that housed a tattoo shop for the past couple of years. The Side Street Café will serve breakfast and lunch and small plates in the evening, as well as espresso and selections from a full service bar.

On Summer Street, Tom Hulbert has completed a major renovation of the Black Friar Inn to include a full kitchen, bar and pub with a rich, wood, old-world flair.

At 30 Cottage Street, at the site of the former Bubba’s tavern, the Finback Ale House is slated to do business this summer.

At 34 Cottage Street, the Rite Aid pharmacy has reopened after several months of doing business out of a trailer while the building was renovated from the aftereffects of a fire that occurred there several years ago.

The Lobster Shack is slated to open at 56 West Street and will replace The Lobster Claw, which closed last year. It will be offering a special “Lobster dinner to go,” package.

The Mount Desert Island Farmer’s Market, which is held in the parking lot of the MDI YMCA at the corner of Park and lower Main streets every Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon will sport three new farmers this year – Blue Zee Farm, on the Blue Hill Peninsula and Freedom Farm, from Freedom, both sell a selection of fresh vegetables, and the Ensemble Farm, from Monroe, carries fresh, hand-rolled pasta products, dressings, and other food items.

Back Bay Farm proprietors Matt Herbruck and Kelly Mason will no longer sell their vegetables and body care products at the market, as they have moved away, but the new owners of the farm are expected to carry on with the business.
